How to make a contribution to QGIS

Financial help

QGIS is Open Source software. That means you have free access to the source code and usually will be able to download it for free. QGIS development is carried out by an all-volunteer group of people. We need funds to attend conferences, purchase software for automated testing, sponsor code feature bounties and so on. All our server costs for hosting the website and downloads are paid out of pocket by developers. Please use the PayPal link provided on this site if you are able to contribute. Even a small donation can make a big difference!

Coding help

Are you a C++ programmer with knowledge of Qt (www.trolltech.com) and GIS? You can help QGIS become better by submitting bug fixes and patches. We look particularly favourably on bug fixes for issues related to the current stable release branch (patches for these will be given priority).

Here are the steps to joining the QGIS coding effort

  1. Take a look through the wiki: http://wiki.qgis.org (in particular the developers section, the New Developers Welcome Pack, and the release plans pages )
  2. Read through the various content at http://qgis.org
  3. Visit the bug queue and see if there are any issues you may be interested to work on.
  4. Visit the feature request tracker to see if there are features you would be interested in developing.
  5. Join the developers mailing list. This is essential to keep abreast of the overall project management and direction. Make your plans known to the developers list and seek out anyone who may be working in a similar area so that you can collaborate if needed.
  6. Implement your code and submit your changes using the patch manager. Please indicate clearly whether your patch is for head, stable release branch or both.
  7. If possible get on to IRC so that we can chat in real time occasionally:
     #qgis on irc.freenode.net
  8. Start feeling proud of the fact that you are now a contributor to a wonderful open source project!

If you wish to discuss anything IRC is usually best place to go!

Packaging help

If you are able to package QGIS for your preferred platform, we'd like to hear from you!

Platform specific help

Are you interested in maintaining a platform specific port of QGIS? You would need to be familiar with the peculiarities of your operating system and probably will need to have some C++ knowledge to in the event that platform specific code needs to be run. We are particularly looking for people with skills in the following areas:

  • win32/mingw (a QT4 port of QGIS is underway so that the OpenSource Qt4 win mingw can be used)
  • solaris
  • other non Linux based unices
  • pocket pc

Documentation and Translation Help

Are you a non-coder but interested to help? Document how you use QGIS! Our documentation could really use a solid core of contributors keeping it current with new developments in the code base, translating it to different languages, adding examples, updating screenshots and so on.

If you wish to get involved with the QGIS documentation and translations effort, contact Marco Hugentobler (marco.hugentobler [at] karto.baug.ethz.ch)

Publicity help

Are you attending a conference / LUG meeting / GIS interest group etc? Why not do a 'show & tell' for QGIS so people can get to hear about it. We would also love to have more contributions of screen movies showing different tasks in QGIS being carried out.
