Quantum GIS

Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows. QGIS supports vector, raster, and database formats. QGIS is licensed under the GNU General Public License. QGIS lets you browse and create map data on your computer. It supports many common spatial data formats (e.g. ESRI ShapeFile, geotiff). QGIS supports plugins to do things like display tracks from your GPS. QGIS is Open Source software and its free of cost (download here). We welcome contributions from our user community in the form of code contributions, bug fixes, bug reports, contributed documentation, advocacy and supporting other users on our mailing lists and forums. Financial contributions are also welcome.

Newsflash

Quantum GIS Version 0.11.0 has been released. It is available in source form, and as binary executables for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux. All versions can be obtained from our download page. If the version for your platform is not available please check back in a day or two as some packages are still being built.
 
 
Open Source GIS Software Overview -- URISA certified workshop

Here is an announcement for an open source GIS workshop that will be presented by the Chesapeake Chapter of the URISA this Wednesday . See the web site for more details and a transcipt of the planned presentation.

Chesapeake Chapter presents a workshop on Open Source GIS software. The workshop will be held at 1351 U Street NW, 2nd floor, near U Street/African American Civil War Memorial Metrostop on the Green Line. Workshop opens at 8am and closes at 5pm. There will be a break for lunch, but lunch is not provided. There are numerous eateries within a two block radius. Admission space is limited. fee will be $40 in advance, $45 for walkins, Register with this webform. This workshop is being held the last week of September on Wednesday, 28 September 2005.

What have people done with open source GIS? Successful open source GIS projects include plotting features of an old misslebase property; plotting incidents of Lyme disease in order to project where to place anti-tick treatments; analyzing fatalities on a highway system and fixing dangerous highway segments with similar characteristics; crimemapping.

ccurisa visited local Linux User Groups NoVALUG, DCLUG, raising awareness of open source GIS with a separate short presentation. This PDF file gives a glimpse of how far opensource GIS has come in the last few years.

The Open Source community is reshaping the software industry, breaking decades of dependence on proprietary, closed systems in favor of open systems running on Open Source. Sara Yurman, our licensed URISA workshop presenter, is an experienced GIS Manager and a founder of Spatial Focus, Inc. She has over 14 years of experience in both organizational and technical aspects of geographic information, encompassing government at the local, regional, and state levels. Her activities have included team-building and change management as well as implementations of raster and vector GIS, GPS data integration, system development, and database design.
