Quantum GIS

Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows. QGIS supports vector, raster, and database formats. QGIS is licensed under the GNU General Public License. QGIS lets you browse and create map data on your computer. It supports many common spatial data formats (e.g. ESRI ShapeFile, geotiff). QGIS supports plugins to do things like display tracks from your GPS. QGIS is Open Source software and its free of cost (download here). We welcome contributions from our user community in the form of code contributions, bug fixes, bug reports, contributed documentation, advocacy and supporting other users on our mailing lists and forums. Financial contributions are also welcome.

QGIS 0.8 Released

The Quantum GIS development team is pleased to announce the release of QGIS version 0.8.

This release incorporates major architectural changes to the code, including the port from Qt 3.x to Qt 4.2.2.

The major new features in this release include:

  • WMS support
  • Improved vector and attribute editing
  • Improved measure tools with area measuring
  • Attribute searching
  • New legend structure
  • Refactoring of API to allow the use of QGIS libraries in mapping applications
  • Improved MapServer export tool
  • Vector layer transparency and anti-aliasing
  • GRASS support in all platforms
  • Enhanced GRASS support and toolbox commands
  • Enhanced vector editing, including copy, cut, paste, snapping and vertex editing
  • Shapefile/OGR layer editing

Binaries for most supported platforms, including Debian Etch, SuSE 10.2, Ubuntu Edgy, OS X, and Windows are available at http://download.qgis.org. The source code is also available, as is a Gentoo ebuild. In the coming days we also hope to have a binary bundle that will run on any Linux platform.

If at all possible, please use the torrents when downloading.

QGIS 0.8 Released -- More to Come

The QGIS development team released version 0.8 ('Titan') on December 29th. At present this is primarily a source release for those that want to build QGIS. Packages for most Linux distributions, Windows, and Mac OS X are being assembled and should be available in the next few days.

In addition to the source, we currently have available packages for Debian Testing (Etch) and SuSE 10.2.

All packages and source are available at http://download.qgis.org.

A formal release notice will be issued once packages for Windows and OS X are available.

QGIS 0.8 Preview 2 Now Available

We are pleased to announce the second preview release of QGIS 0.8 is now available. The subversion repository has been tagged and packagers are busy creating binaries for various platforms. For those who like to build from source, a source package is also available. This page will be updated as additional binaries are made available so watch this space!
